AAE Q64: 'hit the sack/hay'

Hi,

Is there any difference between "hit the sack" and "hit the hay"?
I estimate "hit the hay" is more often used in America, isn´t it?

Thank you

Hi

You are right. Both expressions have the same meaning (old matresses were actually sacks often filled with hay). "Hit the sack" is more common in British English and "hit the hay" is more common in American English.
